Route 1: La Azohía

La Azohía

La Azohía, is a small rural and fishing town that has remained practically isolated, especially because it belongs to the military field, where the vast majority of its population was personnel assigned to the lookout and barracks area, or relatives of these, and a small group of resident civilians who were specialized in rural tasks, grazing and fishing.

As a population entity it belongs to the Perín county council, west of Cartagena. Located to the southwest of said county, in front of Puerto de Mazarrón, with which it shares an inlet.
La Azohía is delimited between the mouths of the Ramblas of El Cañar and La Azohía, which descend from the nearby Sierra de la Muela , a protected natural area that also includes Cabo Tiñoso.
It is a small fishing village. In 2017, 457 inhabitants were registered. Among its attractions are its beautiful bay, the Santa Elena tower and the nearby Battery of Castillitos.

Since Roman times it has been a sparsely populated area due to its difficult location, next to the Sierra de La Muela, and its stone beaches, and others with easier access, sand, and used by shepherds, and fishermen, who lived in the area, and shelter for boats, in its cove and small coves.

It is known that even in Roman times, trap fishing was practiced, which even today is carried out with more modern means. And also an area where the shepherds pass through, it is unknown if there was already a population in the area at that time or if fishermen and shepherds traveled to La Azohía from their settlements and villages.
